Why accusations of deliberate starvation ignore the facts on the ground
Recent claims that Israel is intentionally starving the people of Gaza have captured global headlines. These accusations are not only misleading but also ignore decades of Israel’s commitment to humanitarian values. Understanding the reality requires examining both the war on the ground and the ways Hamas manipulates resources, as well as how Israel has responded to ensure civilian survival.
ICC Charges and the Allegations
Critics point to the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrants for Prime Minister Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Gallant as evidence of wrongdoing. Minister Ron Dermer calls the charge that Israel is deliberately starving Gaza civilians “one of the most outrageous things that has ever happened.”
Israel has never pursued a policy of starvation. In fact, the concern for civilian welfare has often led Israel to allow aid into Gaza even when Hamas could misuse it.
Why Israel Continues to Deliver Aid
Israel provides food and supplies to Gaza not because of international pressure but because of its values as a Jewish state. Humanitarian assistance has been ongoing since the start of the conflict and continues today. Reports of full-blown famine are inaccurate.
If true famine had occurred, there would be widespread starvation deaths and the same visible malnutrition crises seen elsewhere. Israel monitors supply levels closely and steps in to prevent shortages whenever necessary.
Hamas and the Humanitarian Racket
One of the main challenges is that Hamas diverts aid for profit. In 2024 alone, the group is reported to have made between half a billion and one billion dollars reselling supplies intended for civilians.
This tactic is not unique to Gaza; other terrorist groups, including the Houthis in Yemen, have exploited UN-run aid systems. The real victims are the civilians, caught between war and the manipulation of resources by armed groups.
Seeking Alternatives to Hamas Control
Israel has attempted to establish alternative channels for aid distribution to bypass Hamas, aiming to deliver supplies directly to civilians.
This is a difficult but necessary effort to ensure aid reaches the people who need it without strengthening Hamas. International organizations have often criticized these attempts, but the priority should always be civilian survival, not preserving a system exploited by a terrorist organization.
By combining careful monitoring, alternative aid channels, and ongoing pressure on Hamas, Israel seeks to protect civilians while weakening the terrorist organization controlling Gaza.
